Rhythm Nation

May 1st, 2009

The Fifth Chakra!

In May, we will begin class with basic stretching to strengthen our core and to prepare
our bodies for the journey ahead. Utilizing our power into practice can be hard or simple.
For this class will demonstrate how simple it can be (and how difficult the brain tries to make it).
Calling on a powerful and fairly simple rhythm set from Guinea, we will have a warm up that
strengthens our ability to play the 6 basic African Djembe sounds. We will also explore
sharing our power with the other musicians in the room through some back to back exercises
on our drums. It will all culminate in an expansive poly-rhythmic experience and conclude with i
ndividualized drumming shavasanas and a Qi exercise directed at removing the obstacles
to your own power.

Class Level: Beginner to Intermediate.
*Advanced players enjoy the class for its integration of modalities and methods.

Expected Results: An increase in free attention and creative power, a hands on experience
of shifting ourselves and others, a feeling of accomplishment on the hand drums, a desire to
do it again, and a deep night’s sleep. You may also feel hungry immediately following class.
This is normal.
